Commercial Conservatory / Conservatorys for Pubs, hotels, restaurants, public houses, residential care homes, bookshops, pool enclosures, care homes, libraries, museums, schools, factories and other public buildings
The Abbotsford Hotel in Ayr, Scotland was determined to
make full use of an existing courtyard at the rear of the
hotel
and to offer additional function facilities such as weddings
and conferences etc.
Nick Booth, Director of H&B Design Consultants commented ‘we
were contacted back in September last year by award winning
company Solayr with a project to put a glazed extension on
the back of a hotel in Ayr’.
Gordon
Fisher, owner of Solayr, asked H&B
Design to design and cost for a glass roof with a feature
lantern, along with an entrance canopy opening out onto the
new proposed gardens. Gordon commented ‘With Solayr
having a reputation for providing a professional product
and service, we are very particular with whom we work with
as our name is our biggest selling point. Having worked with
Glenn and Nick on several large span and commercial projects
over the years, I knew exactly who to turn to when it came
down to the design and fabrication of the portal and roof’.
Nick continued ‘Once the design and costs had been
agreed, Gordon encountered problem after problem getting
Scottish Building Approval due to the nature of the conservatory.
Both Solayr and H&B Design Consultants proved through
structural calculations and thermal calculations that the
conservatory passed all the stringent criteria required’.
Approval was granted in early February 2006 and the portal
and roof were then put into manufacture. Solayr in the meantime
demolished the existing toilet blocks and prepared the ground
and buildings ready for the installation of the portal and
roof.
Installation took place last week in March with minimal
disruption to the hotel and once the portal, roof and windows
had been
installed, Solayr continued with the rebuilding of a new
toilet block and storage facilities.
Completion of the project and handover were carried out
in early June this year and already the hotel has benefited
from its new extension to good effect with several functions.
The Hunters, owners of the hotel, are delighted with the
outcome of the conservatory.
