Richmond Oak has recently installed
this stunning Victorian Gothic style conservatory,
attached to a period home in Tunbridge Wells.
The conservatory includes many design features familiar
to anybody with some knowledge of the Victorian Age;
the windows and doors in the conservatory have a
gothic shape, there are hints of complicated asymmetrical
shapes in the roof glazing and a steep roof mirroring
the roof of the existing property.
The roof is finished with fleur-de-leys crestings
and finials while the interior has a floor finish
typical of the period.
The whole sits harmoniously with the existing property
and looks like it has been there since it was built
rather than being a recent addition. However, it
has the advantages of modern double glazing, electrically
controlled ventilation and under floor heating for
cold winter days.
Richmond Oak tell us that they have not installed
two conservatories of the same design in the past
two years and like the vast majority of the conservatories
they have designed and built it is made from oak.
Two Tone Conservatory Finishes
Many owners choose to leave the exterior of their
conservatory in a natural oak finish, but for many
Listed Properties and those in a Conservation Area
or Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this is not
an option and the Local Authority may request that
an exterior colour is used that matches the existing
window and doorframes of the property.
Some people find this disappointing having chosen
to have their conservatory built in a timber such
as oak, not just for its strength but also because
it does look wonderful when it is treated to enhance
the beauty of the grain and oak colour.
However, there are compensations. Having the exterior
painted and leaving the interior in its natural finish
does provide a pleasing counterpoint that emphasises
the colour and grain.
The
designers at Richmond Oak spend a considerable
time with their clients and the individual designs
to ensure that their conservatories reach these
standards time after time. You can see more of

When Visual Effect were asked by a customer in Mirfield,
West Yorkshire to design a 'Roman' style conservatory
they were at first a bit shocked. They had installed
hundreds of 'Edwardian' and 'Victorian' conservatories,
but never a 'Roman' conservatory!
The customer was keen to incorporate stone columns
within a very large P Shape design on this award
winning conservatory in Mirfield. The conservatory
is approximately 13 metres wide and over 7 metres
in projection, and was obviously put through building
control and required planning permission, which was
organised by Visual Effect Conservatories. You can
see from the design, uPVC conservatories can easily
compare with the more lavish hardwood conservatory
designs, if they are well specified and designed
The
P-Shape design has a 5 facet (bay) front with a
box gutter to the rear, for attaching to the
bungalow below the existing eaves. The conservatory
has been manufactured in Rosewood uPVC with Smart
Poly inserts in the 35mm polycarbonate roof panels,
and Solaris high specification double glazed units
in the wall frames. To
